The career of the Frenchman Nicolas Anelka has been going through a dip since his last few seasons at Stamford Bridge where he made 41 league appearances during both of that campaign but only managed on scoring 7 goals. When the Premier League season of 2011-12 concluded, he was sold to the Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua where he was reported to earn around €12 million in his annual salary despite only scoring on 2 occasions on 22 matches.
His next football destination was the Italian side Juventus as he spent a loan deal playing at the Juventus Arena until he opted to make a move to West Bromwich Albion and now the French attacker is a free agent following a controversial goal celebration which that earned him a 5 match ban as well as having to pay a £80,000 fine and ultimately ending his contract with West Bromwich Albion.
Now as a free agent Nicolas Anelka is being linked with a move to the Belgium side Standard Liege. The Belgium team is considering signing Anelka as he can turn into an ideal replacement of Michy Batshuayi who used to play for Standard Liege and turned into the top goal-scorer of the club but in this transfer window he joined Marseille and now Standard Liege is searching around for someone that can replace him.
No official bid or offer has been announced between both parties as Anelka himself has revealed to the public that he has considered retiring from playing and hang up his boots.
If Anelka does decide on making a move to the Belgium side Standard Liege it will be a new challenge for him as he has never played football in Belgium despite having a career which has seen the Frenchman playing clubs from France, England, Turkey, China and Italy.
